Drive reactions: 3-on-0 → 3-on-2
Cue
Fill the space the driver leaves.
Principle
First a drive game, only then pass-and-cut. Not moving during a drive is a temporary rule; then come fixed reactions.
Set-up
Three attackers: top and two wings. First without defence, then two defenders.
Rules
Middle drive: the wings fill the corners. Baseline drive: the far wing lifts, the top slides to the open wing. First walking, then at speed, then live.
Where this fits
Period P2 · Halfcourt & spacing
By layer
| Layer 0Aware | One rule: during the drive you stay wide. |
| Layer 1Control | Tell the middle drive and the baseline drive apart. |
| Layer 2Shape your own | Timed reactions in 3-on-2. |
| Layer 3Shape others | Choose the reaction from what the defence does. |
How do you coach it?
Short and precise, coach-led, at most about 10 minutes. Then back to play.
- middle drive: fill the corners
- baseline drive: far wing lifts
- catch the kick-out in balance, ready for a good shot
Autonomy is not the criterion here.

Works on
Replacing random movement with a few fixed reactions
Easier
Only the middle drive.
Harder
Live 3-on-3; the driver chooses the side.
Question to observe
Do they move on the drive, or watch it?
