From the foundation to transition

status_scheduled

During P1, Transition & fullcourt, on Monday 16 November (week 13 of the plan). P0 (stop, catch, fake, first step) and the first weeks of P1 have already happened, so this clinic briefly goes back over that foundation and then moves on to using it at speed.

U12 core line

good stop → fake → first step, leading into deciding on the catch in transition.

The problem

we lose the ball, or the advantage, between the rebound and the first catch.

Shared words

hands ready · safe first, then fast · run wide, fill the corners.

On court

MinActivity
10

Passing game, growing team

Half court.

more

Two passers start as taggers. Only the player holding the ball may tag, and the ball moves by passing. Tagged players join the passers until everyone is caught. It works on catching on the move, passing to a moving target and keeping the head up. Cue: hands ready before the ball arrives.

8

Pivot dribbling under pressure

Pairs, one ball.

more

The defender pressures the ball for real; the attacker protects it with pivot and dribble. The stop and the pivot are there to protect the ball. Cue: stop, then see. Afterwards ask: when did you feel safe, and where were your feet?

15

2-on-1 from half court, into continuous 3-on-2 and 2-on-1

Rebound, outlet, two runners wide to the corners, attack.

more

Whoever stops the attack goes the other way. It covers the outlet, wide lanes, seeing the advantage and deciding on the catch. Cue: safe first, then fast. Rule to try: a basket only counts if the ball handler decided on the catch, without an extra dribble to think.

Watching, avoiding, other groups

Watching

in 2-on-1, does the ball handler decide on the catch or only after a dribble?

To avoid

long unopposed lay-up lines as the main block. If you use lay-ups, add a chasing defender, an angle, the weak hand, or a choice between finishing and passing.

Defense

run back until you are in front of the ball, chest in front before the hands, no reaching from behind.

For other groups

X8 and X10: two-hand catch, jump stop on every catch, 2-on-1 with "do you see your partner?", always sprint back. X14 and VU14: drive, finish and kick-out as one chain; fullcourt man-to-man; stopping under contact. MU16: press break and fullcourt situations, reading transition matchups, and checking that stopping and catching hold up at full speed.

Take home

one transition game in every team session for two weeks.

Question back
where do your players lose the advantage most often, at the rebound, the outlet, the running lane, the catch or the finish?
