Long pass: catch in balance
Cue
Hands ready before the ball arrives, land quietly.
Principle
If you cannot stop, you cannot choose.
Set-up
Two lines, one along each sideline behind half court. The line has the balls; the first player has none.
Rules
The first player sprints forward on their side; the next in line throws the pass. Catch in balance straight into a good stop (jump or stride stop), pivot to face the basket. Then dribble to the other line.
Where this fits
Period P0 · Observe & prepare
By layer
| Layer 0Aware | Short distance, two-hand catch. |
| Layer 1Control | From close to far; every catch ends in a stop. |
| Layer 2Shape your own | Catch under light pressure from a defender. |
| Layer 3Shape others | The long pass as a transition weapon: when yes, when not. |
How do you coach it?
Short and precise, coach-led, at most about 10 minutes. Then back to play.
- hands ready before the ball arrives
- land quietly
- pivot to face the basket
Autonomy is not the criterion here.

Harder
Start close (3–4 m), then further, up to a long pass over half the court (one-hand, overhead or baseball pass).
Question to observe
Do they land quietly and stand in balance at once?
