Skills training
passing → 1v1 on a line → drive → long pass & stop → hop stop & shoot → first step → 1v1
First we play, then we practise, and we finish with a small match.
- We close P0: good stop → fake → first step.
- After the autumn break P1 starts (transition & full court).
- New: the long pass, caught in balance. From close to far; every catch ends in a good stop.
- New: 1v1 on a straight line. One dribble, stop, fake, jab, push: the P0 theme as a game, with someone in your way.
- New word: good shot. Explain it once, briefly; then let the rules do the work.
| Time | Block | |
|---|---|---|
| 18:008 min | Passing game, growing teamgameLearningHalf court. Start with 2 passers; the rest escape. Only the player holding the ball may tag; the ball moves by passing. Tagged = you join the passers. Done when every runner is tagged. moreFocus: hands ready before the ball arrives. Player-centred: variation, questions and room to find a solution. Precise correction of form is not the criterion here. | |
| 18:0810 min | 1v1 on a straight line: stop, fake, jab, pushgameLearningPairs, 1 ball. Each pair gets a line from sideline to sideline (half-court line, free-throw line extended, or an imaginary line). The attacker starts on the sideline and wants to reach the other side, as straight along the line as possible. The defender stands in front and puts on pressure. moreRules: one dribble, then stop. After the stop: fake → jab step → push dribble, one dribble again, stop again. On to the other sideline. The defender stays in front and pressures the ball, but does not grab or reach from behind. Points: other side reached without losing the ball or travelling = point for the attacker. Steal, travel or far off the line = point for the defender. Swap every time. Build-up: defender half-active first (hands behind the back) → then real pressure. Focus: stop low, fake with eyes and ball, jab and push in the same direction. Player-centred: variation, questions and room to find a solution. Precise correction of form is not the criterion here. | |
| 18:188 min | Monkey in the middle 2v2, drive & pass backgameLearning2 against 2, 1 ball. Two attackers pass to each other, two defenders in between. After 3 passes the ball handler may drive to the basket; the partner stays outside the three-point line for the pass back. morePoints: pass back caught outside the line = 1, score after the drive = 2. Interception or travel = swap roles. Player-centred: variation, questions and room to find a solution. Precise correction of form is not the criterion here. | |
| 18:265 min | Stretching with high & low fivesrestIn a small area. Find a partner: high fives and low fives while doing classic stretches. | |
| 18:3110 min | Long pass: catch in balancepracticeTeachingTwo lines, one along each sideline behind half court. The line has the balls; the first player has none and sprints forward on their side; the next in line throws the pass. Catch in balance straight into a good stop (jump or stride stop), pivot to the basket. Then dribble to the other line so everyone catches from both sides. moreBuild-up: start close (3–4 m, chest or overhead) → further → a long pass over half the court (one-hand, overhead or baseball pass). The longer the pass, the harder the catch at speed. Focus: hands ready before the ball arrives, don't run with the ball, land quietly. Short and precise, coach-led, at most about 10 minutes. Then back to play.
Autonomy is not the criterion here. | |
| 18:4112 min | 3 players, 2 balls: hop stop catch & shootpracticeTeachingThrees per basket (or per side), 2 balls. One player always waits at a spot without a ball. A player with a ball passes to them; they hop-stop into the catch (both feet land together, hands ready), shoot, take their own rebound and pass to whoever is now waiting. Then they go to a spot and wait. It keeps flowing. moreBuild-up: first straight in front and close → then the 45s → further, but inside your range. Good shot: the passer calls “good shot” or “throw” after every shot. Only good shots that go in count. Which group gets to 10 first? Focus: hop stop in balance, power from the legs, finish long. Short and precise, coach-led, at most about 10 minutes. Then back to play.
Autonomy is not the criterion here. | |
| 18:5312 min | Continuous catches, different first steppracticeTeachingStart high on the 45. After the catch: stop → shot fake → jab → first step, a different first step each time. Finish with a pull-up or lay-up. moreShort and precise, coach-led, at most about 10 minutes. Then back to play.
Autonomy is not the criterion here. | |
| 19:0517 min | 1v1 in the bucketmatchCompetitionMax 2 dribbles to the closeout. Power lay-up = 2 points, regular lay-up = 1. To 7. moreNew rule: a contested throw scores 0, even if it goes in. Intensity, emotion and consequence. The coach protects the rules and stops play as little as possible. Long explanations and technical correction during play do not belong here. | |
| 19:228 min | Continuous catching & shootingrestUnder the basket. Continuous catching and finishing — power lay-ups. moreThen the questions: skill, fundamental, good shot. And for the break: play outside, other sports, see you on 30 October. |
Every day, every block
- Is everything safe?
- Have I had contact with every player?
- Are they having fun?
- Are they moving? Running?
- Are they repeating the focus point?
- Do I know when to stop play to correct?
- Do I know how to make it easier or harder?
Questions for the players
- What was the skill?
- What was fundamental?
- When is a shot a good shot?
