Skills training · P1 week 1
balance → touchdown → chase race → 3v2-2v1 → outlet & lanes → stop the ball → full-court 3v3
First we play, then we play a small match, then we practise, and we finish with a small match.
- P1 starts: transition and full court. Lots of running, recognising advantage, deciding while running.
- The 2-on-1 rule: with the ball you go to the basket; the defender decides lay-up or pass.
- Defence: run back until you are in front of the ball, chest first.
- New: we start with balance and falling, and a touchdown game from another sport.
| Time | Block | |
|---|---|---|
| 18:005 min | Balance and fallinggameLearningOne leg, turn the head, eyes closed. Then fall and roll forward and sideways, get up at once. moreFocus: up in one movement. Player-centred: variation, questions and room to find a solution. Precise correction of form is not the criterion here. | |
| 18:0512 min | Touchdown gamegameLearningFull court, no dribbling, three steps with the ball. A catch in the end zone = touchdown. moreAfter five minutes: a touchdown within five seconds of winning the ball counts double. Focus: run to the empty space, ahead of the ball. Player-centred: variation, questions and room to find a solution. Precise correction of form is not the criterion here. | |
| 18:178 min | Chase racematchCompetitionThe defender starts after the first dribble. A point for being in front of the ball without reaching. moreBuild-up: defender beside the attacker → behind the attacker. Focus: first run, then chest, only then hands. Intensity, emotion and consequence. The coach protects the rules and stops play as little as possible. Long explanations and technical correction during play do not belong here. | |
| 18:255 min | Stretching with high and low fivesrestDrink and stretch in pairs. | |
| 18:3015 min | Continuous 3-on-2 → 2-on-1matchCompetitionStart with 2-on-1 from half court (3 min), then continuous. moreScore = 2, decided on the catch = 3, a contested throw does not count. Watch: which problem do you see most? That decides the tool next. Intensity, emotion and consequence. The coach protects the rules and stops play as little as possible. Long explanations and technical correction during play do not belong here. | |
| 18:4510 min | Rebound, outlet, running lanespracticeTeachingRebound to the chin, pivot outside, outlet to the wing, two runners wide to the corners. moreIf the 3v2 mostly went wrong at the catch: use ‘Long pass, catch in balance’ instead. Short and precise, coach-led, at most about 10 minutes. Then back to play.
Autonomy is not the criterion here. | |
| 18:558 min | Stop the ball, chest firstpracticeTeachingA 4-metre lane. Walking pace → half speed → live. moreFocus: beaten? turn and run, don't reach. Short and precise, coach-led, at most about 10 minutes. Then back to play.
Autonomy is not the criterion here. | |
| 19:0317 min | Full-court 3-on-3: take the nearest playermatchCompetitionNo waiting for an inbound. In transition take the nearest player, in the half court your own. moreScore within five seconds of winning the ball = 3. Say it out loud: the sprint to the corner without the ball. Intensity, emotion and consequence. The coach protects the rules and stops play as little as possible. Long explanations and technical correction during play do not belong here. | |
| 19:2010 min | Continuous catching and power lay-upsrestCalm catching and finishing under the basket. moreThen the three questions, and per child: who got better at something, who chose something, who did we not reach today? |
Every day, every block
- Is everything safe?
- Have I had contact with every player?
- Are they having fun? Are they running?
- Did every child get something to succeed at, one real choice and a moment with someone else?
Questions for the players
- What was the skill?
- When did you have an advantage, and what did you do with it?
- Who ran to the corner without getting the ball?
